Jully Black @ Glenn Gould Studio

Being so completely into indie rock and roots-folk, it’s sometimes really easy to forget there’s a whole diverse world of other independent music being made in Canada worth of attention. Amongst the biggest — to the extent that it’s mind-boggling how little awareness I have of it — is Urban music.

It was an unusual and somewhat unexpected treat to not only be introduced to Jully Black at a WWF-fundraiser at Glenn Gould Studio last November, but to really enjoy her performance as well.

Jully worked the crowd into a frenzy with a non-stop, heart-racingly energetic show that saw her constantly moving back and forth across the stage and up and down the aisles.

The crowd quickly warmed up to her, and were dancing and clapping in their seats — and even on their feet from time to time. It was unlike any show I’d ever seen in Glenn Gould Studio; it’s no wonder she holds a handful of single, double, and triple platinum records (not to mention a handful more gold records), and awards from Canadian Urban Music Awards and the Junos.

So, without further ado, here’s my recording of Jully’s set. Great summer music for those in the mood for dancing!
