I spent much of Terra Lightfoot‘s set at the Drake Underground wondering why she seemed so familiar to me.
I’m pretty sure it didn’t occur to me until later that she was Julie Fader‘s guitarist at a show I’d seen her opening for Kathleen Edwards at the Dakota Tavern a year or two earlier. Julie Fader’s set was, perhaps somewhat infamously, reviewed somewhat poorly, but luckily, Terra’s set was a significantly more engaging.
The set especially picked up in the second half of the evening, during set highlight of the evening, the as-of-yet unreleased Never Will. The song has got a great hook — and although the lyrics claim it to be a “tired old melody”, it’s as infectious as any roots-rock song I’ve ever heard. Seriously great stuff. One of the best songs I discovered in 2011.
Terra’s vocals are a bit of a nasally drawl that’s more Dylan than pop princess, so if you’re looking for Carrie Underwood, keep on moving. But if you’re willing to take a chance on a unique and interesting emerging new Canadian talent, you could start in a lot worse places than Terra Lightfoot.
