Folly and the Hunter @ Drake Underground

. : : February 8th, 2012 : : . I wasn’t sure I was going to see Ohbijou when they were announced as playing the Drake Hotel‘s 8th birthday party in the Underground. After all, although I like their stuff, I’d hardly call myself a big fan, and I had seen them only six weeks earlier. It wasn’t until Folly and the Hunter was announced as the opening act that I rushed online to reserve a ticket. You may remember from their opening performance for Rebekah Higgs that I fell in love with the Montreal natives quickly and deeply. Their set would also be the trial run for my new…

Kathleen Edwards @ Phoenix Concert Theatre

Before entering The Phoenix for another Kathleen Edwards performance, I had the opportunity to chat with a few people in line. I told the fans who hadn’t been to the Hamilton show the night before they were lucky for two specific reasons. One, the sound quality at the Molson Canadian Studio in Hamilton was outstanding. Two, the absolutely emotionally charged performance from Kathleen could never be duplicated, and any attempt to live up to the prior night’s performance would only meet in disappointment. I wasn’t wrong, but I wasn’t as right as I thought I’d be, either. For the two opening numbers, the same two tracks…

Hannah Georgas @ Phoenix Concert Theatre

. : : February 11th, 2012 : : . After missing the first half of Hannah Georgas‘ set on Friday in Hamilton, I wasn’t about to make the same mistake twice. I erred on the side of overly cautious, and headed out to The Phoenix Concert Theatre and arrived some 50-minutes before doors opened. You’d think, being so over-zealous, I’d be first in line and left out to freeze in the cold for another twenty or so minutes before anyone joined me. Surprisingly, there were already half a dozen die-hards in line. It wasn’t long until we all got chatting, and discovered we all…

Kathleen Edwards @ The Studio

. : : February 10th, 2012 : : . After Hannah Georgas‘ set, the tightly knit crowd began to unravel, so I quickly made my way towards the front and attempted to align myself in a position where I would be best parallel to one of the speaker stacks (and, hopefully, have a good view, too!). Finally with time and room, I pulled off my too-warm-for-inside leather jacket, and shoved it into my bag before pulling out my mics. Between bands, the house lights had gone up, leaving me feeling a bit exposed, but I didn’t spy any security guards walking around, so…

Hannah Georgas @ The Studio

. : : February 10th, 2012 : : . I don’t know what I was thinking when I bought a ticket to see Kathleen Edwards perform at Molson Canadian Studio in Hamilton. First, I already had a ticket for her show in Toronto the very next night at The Phoenix. Second, I’ve only been to Hamilton twice before, and never alone, and I have no idea how to get around it. Third, I am an extremely anxious traveler. Some crazy impulse must have come over me, because it wasn’t until I got my ticket in the mail that reality started to set in. Wait, I thought to…

Ohbijou @ Drake Underground

. : : February 8th, 2012 : : . Every time a Kathleen Edwards concert is around the bend, I seem to have an influx of gear problem. In fact, I recently haven’t had much luck with Colleen Brown shows, either. So, when my left-channel microphone started to go at a recent Colleen Brown show, weeks before the next Kathleen Edwards show, I should have seen it coming. So, shortly after the Colleen Brown date at the Dakota Tavern (available elsewhere on the site), I ordered some new mics. I’d been using Core Sound Binaurals for the last good while, but this was the second, exact same problem…

Del Bel @ El Mocambo

. : : October 21st, 2011 : : . Sometimes it’s hard to get out to a show to see opening bands. I know it. You get off work, need time to change, get ready, wind down, make dinner, catch the highlights on the tele, whatever. And without name recognition or previously established familiarity, you find excuses to delay arriving on time. “Maybe we should grab a drink at the bar down the street, first,” or “I could use a quick cat nap before heading down.” I try to avoid these all-too familiar pitfalls, because I’ve discovered SO MANY wonderful local talent…
