Month: December 2011

Sloan, Rural Alberta Advantage, Ohbijou and Bonjay @ The Great Hall

. : : December 21st, 2011 : : . Between moving, Christmas, and an up-coming destination wedding (of which I am in the wedding party), I really don’t have the time to sit down, transfer, EQ, encode, upload, and blog about the concerts I’ve been going to, and have accumulated a significant backlog. But there are some shows that demand immediate attention, so I’ve sort of made time to sit down and do MOST of the things required to update this page. Unfortunately, I don’t have time right now to do a blog entry that would do a four-act benefit concert justice,…

The Rest @ Tranzac

. : : December 16th, 2011 : : . I was excited to see Danny Michel play Lee’s Palace for a couple of months. Danny is one of my all-time favourite live performers, and after missing him play southern Ontario gigs of various sizes a couple of times over the summer, I was happy he’d be playing what was sure to be a good show close to home. That is, of course, Until The Rest announced their special Restivus show. On one hand, you had Danny Michel. On the other? Both The Rest and Dark Mean. Then again, it was the first time I’d been able to see Danny…

Paper Lions @ El Mocambo

. : : December 10th, 2011 : : . After a month-long weekly residency gig in Toronto, the Paper Lions took to a cross-Canada tour that seemed to bring them to every major (and some minor) Canadian city EXCEPT Toronto. I guess it was kind of rude to expect another stop by, but it would have been nice to see them again. Although they weren’t letting us in on the secret yet, the Paper Lions had a well-calculated reason for shipping Toronto for the weeks-long Rolling Oyster Revue tour. Namely, the Young Lions Music Club (no relation) that put on the aforementioned residency at Toronto’s The Supermarket would…

Meaghan Smith @ Bay/Bloor Indigo

. : : December 14th, 2011 : : . I didn’t know I was going to get a chance at redemption for the technically marred recording of Meaghan Smith from last week until I was writing the final paragraphs of my review for the blog. In an off-hand statement, Meaghan threw a special in-store appearance at the Indigo Bookstore at the Manulife Centre in Toronto in amongst the final dates of the previously announced tour. I rubbed my eyes. Was I dreaming? Did I miss something? I checked the blog, her Facebook, and other tour listings online, and this second Toronto show was not to be…

Meaghan Smith @ Rivoli

. : : December 7th, 2011 : : . Time for the seasonable blog updates to come in, folks! First, I started off with my “re-gift” of a CBC Radio-sourced Colleen Brown recording, which leads into my next update quite nicely. You see, it was Colleen Brown who introduced me to the inimitable Meaghan Smith. Colleen opened for Meaghan about a year and a half ago and, initially, I was a little vexed at the higher ticket price necessitated by the draw of a headliner I’d never heard of. Of course, that spite melted away the second the stunning beautiful took the stage and started…

Nicole Atkins @ Drake Underground

. : : December 3rd, 2011 : : . It seems like it’s been a really long time since I’ve seen Nicole Atkins live. I first saw her in 2007, and then again less than three months later in the early part of 2008. I guess I took the proximity of her home state of New Jersey for granted, assuming such frequent visits to her northern neighbours was the norm. So, then, what’s the opposite of “when it rains, it pours”? When it’s dry, it’s drought? Well, there was definitely a Nicole Atkins drought in Toronto thereafter. Breaking an unbearably REALLY LONG two year streak of…

Danielle Duval @ Piston

. : : November 30th, 2011 : : . As you may recall, I first was introduced to Danielle Duval when she played a solo set opening for Royal Wood at the Rivoli. I was intrigued enough to catch her on CBC, and discovered I knew a couple of her band members. When she announced a residency gig at The Piston for the month of November, I knew I had to make it to at least one of the shows. And I made it to the first of the five shows, but in a colossal moment of idiocy, I forgot all of my recording equipment at home. It has…
