Lily and José @ Drake Underground

When Lily and José were announced as the opening act for Rebekah Higgs a few weeks back, I assumed they were a little-known duo act, probably from the East Coast.

Turned out, it was husband and wife team Lily Frost and José Miguel Contreras, both who have carved out separate, successful musical careers, the former as a solo performer and the second as the heart of By Divine Right.

The two of a history of collaborating on each others projects, but this is the first instance I was able to find of the two sharing a set equally under this particular moniker.

It worked well — the duo had a vintage 60’s folk sort of thing going on for much of the set, and their easy back-and-forth banter was charming. Although low-key poppy folk songs were the order of the night, the highlights of the performance were the back-to-back jazzy Billie Holliday Lover Come Back To Me and All I Can Do Is Cry Mike Ness covers.

It would be needlessly redundant for me to continue to harp on about how great the sound at the Drake Underground was that night, as always, so I will just say this is a predictably damn fine sounding tape, and there’s a great number of songs that are well worth your time.

As they’ve started a family out in the countryside on Ontario, don’t expect many tour dates for Lily and José; for most people, this will be the closest they come. But listen to the sample below and tell me it isn’t a fine consolation prize!
