Boxer The Horse @ Rivoli

. : : September 15th, 2011 : : .

I’ve got a backlog of recordings that haven’t been posted right away for the last two months or so that I’m struggling to finally sit down and get out. The backlog has accumulated for various reasons; mostly due to time constraints, lack of familiarity, or sub-par sound quality.

This first recording, unfortunately, falls into all three categories.

Boxer The Horse, named Best New Band of 2010 by CBC Radio 3, played the first opening slot for fellow East Coaster Rebekah Higgs‘ record release party. With a sophomore album not quite in the can yet, the band came ready to treat the crowd to a crop of fresh songs.

To be honest, I wasn’t in top shape on this particular evening. I was tired, perhaps a bit under the weather, and not altogether familiar with any of the bands on the bill. When I got to the Rivoli, I grabbed a chair to the side of the room, about a third of the way back from the stage or so. There was no one else at that side of the room — they were all congregating by the bar — so I figured I could rest a bit, and try recording from a seated position.

This was a mistake.

A couple of minutes into the Boxer the Horse set, a group of people decided to stand right in front of me, blocking my sight lines. Normally in this situation, I’d quickly and quietly shift to another position and continue on. But my bag, jacket and laptop were all scattered haphazardly on the table beside me; mix that with my fatigue, and you have a recipe for resigned ambivalence.

So, unfortunately, I didn’t get to actually SEE much of Boxer The Horse’s setlist, and the sound mix at the Rivoli really wasn’t very good, so I wasn’t exactly rushing home to post this recording. Especially since I didn’t have a whole lot to write about. I was present at the show, and yet absent from the performance, in a way.

I have since checked out some of the bands studio work, and I have to say this recording doesn’t do the band justice. It may, however, be of interest to fans of the band, and as such, is being posted her for posterity’s sake.
