Jim Cuddy @ Drake Underground

. : : September 25th, 2011 : : . I don’t remember how I found out that Jim Cuddy was going to be doing a public interview with NOW Magazine at the Drake Underground, but I did know. Honestly, I wasn’t really all that interested. $20 to listen to a man talk for what? Half an hour? Forty-five minutes, tops? I’m not sure if I also knew he was going to do a short acoustic set — if I did, I’d completely forgotten about it. After hearing both his set on CBC and more details about the show a few days prior, I consulted my…

Jim Cuddy @ CBC Radio One

. : : September 23rd, 2011 : : . I was finishing writing the previous blog entry on Whitehorse when my friend Rick messaged me to let me know that Jim Cuddy was going to be playing a set with his band on CBC Radio 1’s Q. Any Canadian worth their salt would drop anything they’re doing to listen to a founding Blue Rodeo member, so sure enough, I stopped typing mid-sentence, grabbed my Edirol recorder, and rushed down to my TV to hook up to the digital FM signal broadcast through my Satellite receiver. Jim stopped by CBC Studios to speak with DJ Jian Ghomeshi about his forth-coming album, Skyscraper…

Rebekah Higgs @ Rivoli

. : : September 15th, 2011 : : . At the opening of Rebekah Higgs‘ CD release party for Odd Fellowships at The Rivoli in Toronto, she introduced herself to the audience for anyone “dragged out by their friend,” but jokingly stated that everyone else in the room was probably a friend or family member. I would have chuckled to myself, thinking it a clever self-deprecating joke if I hadn’t already seen the size of the evenings guest list (three pages!) and mentally compared it to the number of people in the room (75 seems a good guesstimate). Full disclosure: I only know the size of the…

Whitehorse @ Glenn Gould Studio

. : : September 21st, 2011 : : . When Whitehorse, then still titled “Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet,” announced a show at beautiful Glenn Gould Studio in the CBC building, I was a bit conflicted as to whether or not to buy tickets. I’ve run across both singers more than once, but usually at NXNE showcase events where they perform only a handful of songs and then disappear behind the curtains. I’ve been impressed by their performances, both together and individually, but for whatever reason, I haven’t spent any significant time following up on my interest. On the other hand, it was sure to be a…

Olenka and the Autumn Lovers @ Great Hall

. : : July 29th, 2011 : : . I must admit, I was tempted to flee The Great Hall after The Rest‘s set at the Out of the Box Festival. I was expecting greatness out of the Rest, and wasn’t disappointed. I was largely impressed with Polynesian Bride. What are the chances lightning would strike thrice in a single evening? Couple that with arriving after a full work day behind me, the promise of another one ahead of me, and the bands already being some twenty minutes behind schedule, the idea of abandoning ship in favour of much-needed sleep weighed heavily on my mind. Knowing that…
